Chronological History of the Bournemouth Raiders

2005

13th February 2005 - Jon Parsons has taken over as manager of the Bournemouth Raiders for the 2005 season, after a number of senior players announced that they would not be returning for this season.

Jon can be contacted via the Raiders forum, where a number of new players have registered their interest in the last few weeks, so we hope to be able to enter 5-man tournaments going forward in 2005.

2004

12th December 2004 - Raiders finish 3rd in Beach Bowl IV

We put in some great performances yesterday to finish 3rd out of 8 teams and also clinch the ESFL 5man league title for the second time in three years by a convincing margin. We finished the season with 7 wins out of 9 games.

Scores:

Bournemouth 19-0 Chatham Sharks

We struggled early on and went in at half-time scoreless, but exploded with 3 second half TD's.Matt Heasman hit Nick Michael and Allen Gilbert for scores, and Abdul Lawal returned a giant interception from hos own endzone just as Chatham appeared set to tie the scores. Jon Wells recorded a further interception

Bournemouth 0-20 South Wales Rebellion

The current BYAFA Youth Flag champs, had earlier signalled their intentions by thrashing Andover 30-0.  We kept them at bay early on, but they were too organised on offense and defense and scored three unanswered TD's. Jon Wells caught an interception for the Raiders.

Bournemouth 32-0 Andover Thrashers B

A crucial game. If we won, we'd take the national title. A Nick Michael interception gave us the ball early on deep in the Thrashers territory and Heasman hit Gilbert on a center out pattern in the corner of the endzone. Later in the first half, the Raiders extended their lead on Michael's catch from Heasman. 13-0 at half-time, the offense barely got on the field in the second half as the defense returned three Thrashers passes for scores - interceptions returned for TD's were scored by Michael (2) and Wells.

3rd placed playoff - Bournemouth 7-6 Chichester Sharks (Michael to Lawal, Heasman to Michael 1 PAT)

It looked like being 0-0 going into half-time, until Watson hit Pete Steele on a bomb right at the end. Crucially Nick Michael sacked Watson to prevent the 1PAT from being scored. In the second half, the Raiders drove up field, and despite some heavy tackling Lawal caught a Heasman pass on 4th down and dived over the half-way line to continue the momentum. On the next play, Heasman handed off to Michael who threw the ball back to him for 10 more yards. A repeat play followed, but Michael hit Lawal wide open in the end zone for the go-ahead score. Heasman picked out Michael for the 1 PAT. There was still time for the Sharks, but Huddy's sack of Watson sealed the game
for the Raiders and 3rd place.

South Wales won the group, and went onto beat Andover Thrashers A 21-12 in the final.

3rd October 2004
Autumn Bowl 5man Tournament - Review

The Barbarians and the Bournemouth Raiders tied for top spot in the 3rd ESFL tournament of 2004 in Chichester, but it was the Barbarians who took the title with a superior points scored record.

Bournemouth Raiders 14-0 Bournemouth Deckchairs

In this battle of the two Bournemouth teams, it was the underdog Deckchairs who controlled things in the first half through the powerful running of Jon Parsons and the astute QB'ing of Martin Brown. 0-0 at half-time, but the Raiders took the lead straight after when QB Matt Heasman hit Nick Michael in the corner of the endzone where he made a clutch catch from 1 yard out to put the Raiders 6-0 up. On the next Deckchairs drive, Brown's pass was tipped and Tim Smith returned it for a score. Smith hit Heasman for the 2 PAT to give the Raiders a 14-0 win.

Bournemouth Deckchairs 6-14 Barbarians

Deckchairs took a surprise lead on Brown's pass to Jon Parsons who ran down the sidelines for the lead, but the Barbarians hit back on the back of Duffy's TD passes to McIntosh and Dayle Kirby. Both Barbarians TD's were converted by Jay Cashman.

Chichester Sharks 0-9 Bournemouth Raiders

In this battle between the two coastal clubs, it was Bournemouth who defeated the Sharks for the first time in 2 years with a dominant defensive display. On the Raiders second possession, they marched up field and scored on Heasman's pass to Nick Michael. The 1 PAT followed on Heasman's pass to Mark Elliott. The Raiders defense stood firm against the potent offense of the Sharks led by England international Nick Watson, and it was Elliott who sealed the win with a crucial sack of Watson for a safety near the end to give Bournemouth a 9-0 win.

Bournemouth Raiders 2-14 Barbarians

A fatigued Bournemouth side were outplayed by a superb defensive performance from the Barbarians, who dominanted this encounter. It was the Raiders who took a 2-0 lead on a fumble by QB Duffy, but he made amends shortly after by firing a TD to Justin Handley to give them a 7-2 halftime lead. The Barbarians extended their lead to 14-2 on Duffy's pass to Kirby, and their defense then snuffed out any hope Raiders had to close the gap as time expired.

Chichester Sharks 6-12 Bournemouth Deckchairs

The Deckchairs won their first ever game, with a victory at the death against the Sharks. Martin Brown put them 6-0 up on his pass to Vincent Gurrea, and they held their lead to half-time. With 8 minutes left, the Sharks drew level when Watson fired in his 3rd TD of the day. With seconds to go Brown launched a bomb downfield which was caught by Barnaby Kerr, and it was Kerr to caught the gamewinner as time expired from Brown.

30th September - Raiders ready for Chichester

After an absence of 4 months, the Raiders return to ESFL 5man action on Sunday with the Chichester Autumn Bowl II. The Raiders go into the tournament near the top of the ESFL 5man league, and will hope to build on their success of Fareham in June.

5th/6th June - IFFF World Cup qualifying tournament. Raiders finish 3rd and qualify!

Bournemouth competed on both days of the IFFF World Cup Qualifier in Fareham last weekend, and after their 3rd place finish against the odds in the 5man competition on Saturday have claimed a spot in the World Cup in Orlando in Feb 2005!  The top 4 spots at each World Cup qualifier (there are international competitions in 2004 in Fareham, Madrid and Montreal, as well as about 15 tournaments in the US) lead to invites to compete in the World Cup. Sadly I don't think we'll get enough players for that!

The tournament provided a great opportunity for us to take on foreign opposition for the first time, as Team USA (featuring 7 players who played for them in the World Cup final against Canada in February in the Dominican Republic) and the French League leaders, Troyes Pygargues, both travelled over to compete. The 5man tournament was won by the USA, who defeated Troyes 25-6 in the final. We finished the top ranked English side (3rd overall) in the 9 team competition which was a great performance. The 9man competition was again won by the USA who defeated Troyes in the final again - this time 20-6. We finished sixth out of the 6 teams that took part in the 9man competition.

5man tournament - Sunday 5th June

Raiders 12- 0 Troyes Pygargues B

Against the Troyes B team, the Raiders were always in control defensively though they struggled in the first half to move the ball effectively on offense. Right on half-time Matt Heasman hit Nick Michael on a bomb to open the scoring, and John Parsons ran in in the second half from 5 yards out to give the Raiders a 2 TD winning cushion.

Raiders 13-6 Andover Hawks B

Andover were a new side too for the Raiders, and stunned us when they intercepted Heasman and returned the pick for a TD on Bournemouth's first possession. That was their sole success though as again the Raiders defense led by Karl Forrest, Barney Kerr, Vincent Gurrea and Mark Elliott stepped up. Parsons registered his second running TD of the day, and Barney Kerr
returned an interception for a TD to seal the win.

Raiders 13-6 North Devon Dogs - quarter-final

Bournemouth's wins with just conceding 6 points meant that out of the 9 teams, we entered the playoffs as the number 1 ranked side. We would take on the North Devon Dogs, who were the ESFL 5man league leaders after their outstanding performance in Birmingham in April (where they didn't concede a point). The Dogs had been drawn in the same group as USA and Troyes A and
had lost both games. The Raiders now had momentum, and on the Dogs first possession Barney Kerr picked off Roy Tanton and returned it for a score. On the Raiders next possession Heasman picked out Nick Michael on a long pass, and Parsons ran in the TD, and the Raiders had a 13-0 half-time lead. Straight after half-time, the Raiders conceded on blown coverage, but the defense were never in trouble after that and we held on to qualify for the semi-finals.

Raiders 6-27 Troyes Pygargues A - semi-final

In the semi-final we took on the French league leaders, the Troyes Pygargues (the Parrots!). Troyes contained a superb QB and several quick receivers. It was clear this was going to be a tough game, and in the first half we put up a great fight. After going 7-0 behind early on, Heasman and Michael linked up for their 3rd TD of the day to pull the scores to 7-6. Troyes scored again just before half-time to extend their lead. Despite several decent drives, the Raiders were unable to score any more points, and the French scored 2 more TD's in the second half to win comfortably.

Raiders squad: Matt Heasman, Mark Elliott, John Parsons, Barney Kerr, Vincent Gurrea, Karl Forrest, Nick Michael, Richard Cleveland

9man tournament - Sunday 6th June

Raiders 0-26 Team USA

Despite a few late withdrawals, we supplied the bulk of the 9man team that was bolstered by 3 members of the Birmingham Raiders (Lawrence Vos, Darren Kangurs and Keith Phillips) and the Fen Harriers QB Martin Brown. Against the crack US squad, our inexperienced side would always be up against it. Two TD's in either half led to a comfortable win, but Keith Phillips made
several decent catches, and our O and D line performed pretty well.

Raiders 0-12 Derby/Chichester Combined

In the final round-robin game against a combined Derby and Chichester team (which was basically the Team England squad that went to the World Cup in the Dominican Republic in February), the Raiders put in a spirited performance but the damage was done early on as their opponents scored on a run in the opening 10 minutes, and despite some decent drives and further TD
late in the second half led to defeat.

Raiders 0-6 Leicester Eagles

In the wild-card game against the 2002 and 2003 league champions, the Raiders put in their best performance of the 9man tournament. Leicester used their devastating running game to great affect in the first half as they took the lead early on on a Ryan Melbourne run. But the Raiders stepped up the pace and started to make their tackles that stopped a few promising Eagles drives  - notably Darren Kangurs tackle on 4th down on the Raiders 1 yard line. In the second half, Martin Brown picked out Andrew Clowes and Keith Phillips on a number of passes and despite a no huddle offense towards the end, the Raiders couldn't quite get in a position to tie the scores.

Raiders squad: Matt Heasman, Barney Kerr, Vincent Gurrea, Richard Cleveland, Alan Huddy, Matt Hemsley, Andrew Clowes, Martin Brown, Lawrence Vos, Darren Kangurs, Keith Phillips

8th May - Seven Raiders play for England in win over Ireland

The following Bournemouth Raiders played for England in their international in Dublin on May 8th:

John Parsons
Rich Cleveland
Nick Michael
Andre Clarke
Abdul Lawal
Matt Heasman
Vincent Gurrea

For photos click here

England travelled to Dublin with an experienced 18 man squad drawn from 6 ESFL sides to take on Ireland in the 2nd Senior Flag International Challenge match between the countries. In warm conditions England came out with an all-out pass attack, but they hadn't counted on the superb secondary of the Irish who shut them out on their opening four drives without completing a pass. Ireland's offense moved the ball well throughout, but England DB's stepped up to the plate and ended all their long drives with interceptions - the most promising drive ending when Vincent Gurrea picked off Ireland QB Kevin Mullen on England's 5 yard line after he had led them down field on the back of good running by Steve Dunne and Liam Farrell.

Towards the end of the first half, Andre Clarke picked off Mullen to give England the ball in great field position. Three plays later, QB Roy Tanton found Nick Moffat over the middle from two yards out to put England ahead. Nick Watson hit Gurkinder Mann in the corner of the endzone for the 1 PAT to give England a 7-0 lead at the end of the first half.

Ireland came out with a time consuming drive at the beginning of the second half that took almost 20 minutes off of the clock, which culminated in Steve Dunne's 5 yard run up the middle on a draw play, but crucially the 2 PAT fell short as Ireland looked to take the lead.

Tanton tried to hit straight back for England with a 40 yard pass down the right hand touchline to his North Devon Dogs teammate Johnny Stevenson to give England a 1st and goal from the Ireland 6, but they could not punch the ball in with the closest being Matt Stevenson's catch in the endzone being ruled that he did not have full control as he landed.

England did not have to wait long to put the clinching score on the board when Abdul Lawal returned a Mullen's 5th inteception of the game 21 yards for a score to make the score 13-6 with 9 minutes left. Ireland had one last chance to score, and drove down to the England 20 yard line, but strong tackling by Brown, Michael and Clarke, and breaks up by Tim Smith and Lawal snuffed out these chances to give England revenge for the 27-7 loss they suffered in 2000.

At the end of game ceremony, Ireland chose Vincent Gurrea as the England MVP who had 3 interceptions in the game, and England chose Ireland DB Peter Mullen for his outstanding play in the Irish secondary. Special thanks must also go to Liam Farrell for organising the game, and the IAFL officials who officiated a game played in good spirits throughout.

Scoring:

0-7 Moffat 2 yard pass from Tanton (Watson to Mann 1 PAT) 43.51

4th April 2004
- Bournemouth beaten in Birmingham

We travelled to Birmingham yesterday with a small squad more in hope than expectation. We came away with what on paper look thumping defeats, but we put in good performances.

Bournemouth 8-20 Staffordshire University

Trailing 6-0 at half-time, John Parsons broke a number of tackles to run in from distance and tie the scores. On the next drive for Staffordshire, Alan Huddy registered a saefty to put us 8-6 ahead with just 2 minutes to go. Then the story of our afternoon, missed tackles led to Staffs scoring twice to register what looks like a comfortable win.

Bournemouth 0-32 North Devon Dogs

The Dogs were too fast and too organised for us. Missed tackles galore - we thoroughly deserved to be thrashed in this game. Not much to write about here apart from the huge rainstorm that meant we couldn't pass the ball!

Bournemouth 0-15 Birmingham Raiders

Again not able to run or pass the ball, Birmingham broke tackles on two possessions to score from long range, and we gave up a safety too!

Bournemouth 2-20 Leicester Eagles

Looks a hammering but was probably our best performance of the day. The Eagles went 6-0 up by half-time, but defensively we were playing well with good tackling. Offensively, we were also moving the ball well, but couldn't quite punch it in. In the second half, Leicester came out with a 3 RB's in a I formation - our defense lined up all on the center which must have confused them as they fumbled the ball for a safety. 6-2 down with two minutes to go, we shot ourselves in the foot again as we gave up a long distance TD from their 5 yard line on 4th down, and then they returned an interception for a TD on the last play of the game to give them a somewhat flattering scoreline.

Four defeats our of four then, and we really need more players for tournaments if we are to compete effectively. Thanks to the players who did travel.

The next tournament is SATURDAY 5TH JUNE at Portsmouth (United Services Ground), when we will be entering a 5man tournament which features Team USA and the French national team. Let's get a good side out for that one. The following day sees a 9man tournament which we will try to field a side.Later in the summer is a tournament in Barnstable that the North Devon Dogs are hosting (that will be in August).

14th March - Allstar matches, 10 Raiders play

The Northern Knights triumphed 28-6 over the Southern Pirates in the 9man ESFL Allstar match at Witney Rugby Club. The North took the lead on a Martin Brown pass to Nick Moffatt on 4th and 10, to go 6-0 ahead in the first quarter. Despite some impressive drives by the Pirates, the Knights extended their lead when Pirates QB Nick Watson was sacked for a safety, and on the subsequent drive MVP RB Michael Soboagl ran in from 55 yards out to put the North up 14-0. In the third quarter, Bournemouth Raiders QB Brad Smith got the Pirates back in the game with a blistering 70 yard run, and for a moment it looked like the momentum would swing back to the South. Soboagl, on his way to over 100 yards rushing on the day, had other ideas as he burst away for his 2nd TD, and then QB Brown added the icing on the cake with a pass to Lawrence Tallon to seal the win.

The South got some revenge in the 5man challenge with a 18-6 victory thanks to 2 TD passes from Nick Watson to Raiders Tim Smith, and another Raider Barnaby Kerr tacked on a safety.

GAME SHIRTS

17 of you have ordered new shirts. They have now been received, and I will distribute as and when I see you

LAST TOURNAMENT

Thanks to all of you who played in Beach Bowl III in December. We had 17 players on the day, so we split the squad into two teams - the Bournemouth Raiders and the Bournemouth Deckchairs. The Deckchairs contained many of our new players, and were led by Rich Cleveland and Mark Elliott. Unfortuantely they didn't win a game, but many of them gained good match experience. The Raiders did well and reached the final after 3 wins out of 3 - they lost 7-6 to our arch-rivals (the Leicester Eagles) in the final.

NEXT TOURNAMENT

We play next on Sunday 4th April at Birmingham in EasterBowl II. This will be a 5man tournament, and we will be wearing our new kit. If you can play in this tournament let me know.

2004 SEASON

We will be entering as many 5man tournament as we can, and we are also joining forces with other teams in the South to form a 9man team to take on Fen Harriers and Leicester Eagles in 2 9man competitions later in the year
(one tournament to be held in the South on 22nd August and one in the North on 10th October).

28th September 2003 - Autumn Bowl I - BSFL 5 ON 5 TOURNAMENT

Venue: Chichester, W.Sussex

Results:

Bournemouth Raiders 26-0 Team Extreme
Bournemouth Raiders 19-12 PA Knights
Bournemouth Raiders 27-6 Sussex Thunder

Semi-Final

Bournemouth Raiders 23-12 Kent Exiles

Final

Bournemouth Raiders 6-6 Chichester Sharks

The Bournemouth Raiders returned to British Senior Flag League action and winning ways on Sunday with a fantastic team effort to go through the day unbeaten and jointly share the Chichester Autumn Bowl. Using an unorthadox offense of two QBs playing at the same time (Matt Heasman threw for 5tds and Brad Smith both threw for 6), they won 3 out of 3 group games, and then defeated the Kent Exiles 23-12 in the semi-finals. In the final they tied 6-6 with the Chichester Sharks.

The Raiders split their 12 man squad in two to have a separate offense and defense, which helped players keep their fitness throughout the day. As a result of the Raiders good results, we have now moved up to 4th in the league out of 19 teams. The table can be found by clicking here

Squad: Matt Heasman, Brad Smith, Allen Gilbert, Mark Elliott, Nick Michael, Dan Rochester, Duncan Rochester, Bene Lewis, Alan Huddy, Vincent Gurrea, Mike Drobny, James Law

Group Games

Bournemouth Raiders 26-0 Team Extreme Derby

The Raiders opened the tournament with a comprehensive win over Team Extreme from Derby. Matt Heasman fired two TD's, one each to Brad Smith and the other to rookie Dan Rochester who showed good hands to catch a low pass over the middle, and in between Brad Smith threw a long range TD to debutant Mike Drobny, and pass into the corner of the endzone to Nick Michael.

Stats:

Matt Heasman to Brad Smith (Brad Smith to Mike Drobny for the 1PAT) 7-0 Brad Smith to Mike Drobny (Matt Heasman to Dan Rochester 1PAT) 14-0 Matt Heasman to Dan Rochester (1PAT failed) 20-0 Brad Smith to Nick Michael (1 PAT failed) 26-0

Interceptions: Bene Lewis, Mike Drobney, Duncan Rochester

Bournemouth Raiders 18-12 PA Knights

Against the PA Knights, the Raiders raced into an early 12-0 lead on the back of Heasman's short pass to Smith who ran in from distance, and straight afterwards Nick Michael scored on an interception return for a TD. The Knights came back and scored on two passing TD's to tie the scores. Late in the game, following a good drive Brad Smith ran in from 6 yards out to win the game for the Raiders.

Stats:

Matt Heasman to Brad Smith (1 PAT failed) 6-0
Nick Michael interception return (1 PAT failed) 12-0
PA Knights TD 12-6
PA Knights TD 12-12
Brad Smith run (1 PAT failed) 18-12

Bournemouth Raiders 27-6 Sussex Thunder

In a really tight opening, it took a sack from rookie James Law to put the Raiders in the lead. With the Raiders then receiving the ball, they marched straight down the field to open a 9-0 lead on Brad Smith's pass over the middle to Mike Drobny. The Raiders offense really came into their own thereafter as they marched down the field at will, and Brad Smith put them 15-0 up on a pass to Mark Elliott right in the middle of the endzone. Sussex scored to make it 15-6, but Smith hit back with a long pass over the middle to Bene Lewis, who made a spectacular catch over his shoulder to restore the Raiders commanding lead. James Law sealed the impressive win over the BSL Division Two side with an interception at the back of the Raiders endzone, and he ran it back the full length of the field.

Scorers:

James Law safety 2-0
Brad Smith to Mike Drobney (Matt Heasman to Brad Smith for 1 PAT) 9-0
Brad Smith to Mark Elliott (1 PAT failed) 15-0
Sussex Thunder TD 15-6
Brad Smith to Bene Lewis (1 PAT failed) 21-6
James Law interception return from own endzone (1 PAT failed) 27-6

Semi-Final - Bournemouth Raiders 23-12 Kent Exiles

Against another BSL Division Two outfit, the Raiders triumphed again with a hard fought 23-12 semi-final victory. The Exiles defense was the hardest the Raiders had played against so far and the Raiders had to improvise superbly on a number of occasions to overcome them. Brad Smith opened the scoring throwing a long distance pass to Drobny to put the Raiders 7-0 up, but the Exiles were moving the ball well - each of their first 3 drives went to the Raiders 1 yard line - but crucially they only scored 1 TD in these drives. The Raiders moved into a 14-6 half-time lead when Heasman dumped off a pass to Smith who ran in from half way. Early in the second half the Raiders scored on a safety when the Exiles QB under pressure threw the ball out of the endzone, and then Smith extended the lead to 23-6 with a run from a few yards out. Exiles hit back late on, interceptions by Gurrea and Drobny protected the lead.

Stats:

Brad Smith to Mike Drobney
Bournemouth Raiders safety after QB threw ball away
Matt Heasman to Brad Smith
Brad Smith run
Interceptions: Vincent Gurrea, Mike Drobney

Final - Bournemouth Raiders 6-6 Chichester Sharks

Against their big rivals from the south coast, the Raiders took the lead in the championship game on a 5yd pass from Heasman to Dan Rochester, but the Sharks hit back with a TD to tie the scores at 6-6 apiece. With a strong defensive performance by the Raiders, the high powered Sharks offense did not come close to scoring again, and Nick Michael came close to winning it for the Raiders with an attempted interception but he could not quite hang on. In fading light it was agreed not to play overtime and the tournament was shared.

Scorers:

Matt Heasman to Dan Rochester (1 PAT failed) 6-0
Chichester Sharks TD 6-6

12th May 2003 - Raiders pull out of BSFL 9-on-9 league

The Bournemouth Raiders will not be able to enter a side in the BSFL 9-on-9 league for 2003. After very disappointing turnouts for our last 3 tournaments (8 in October, 9 in December and 8 in April), and having canvassed opinion we cannot guarantee being able to field a squad for a full season.

The Raiders will continue though! Our suggestion is for a 9-on-9 championship day in London for 4 sides. We would be able to get Bournemouth to enter a one off 9-on-9 tournament in London. They would be two semi-finals, a 3rd/4th place playoff and a championship game.

We also will continue to play in the BSFL 5-on-5 championship, and the next tournament is to be played in London (Hyde Park) on the 13th July.

27th April 2003 - EASTER BOWL I - BSFL 5 ON 5 TOURNAMENT

Venue: Billesley, Birmingham

Results:

Bournemouth Raiders 6-14 Chichester Sharks (Raiders scorer: Matt Heasman pass to Daniel Nehorai - 1PAT failed)
Bournemouth Raiders 18-0 Topgun Miramar (Raiders scorers: Matt Heasman 3 TD passes, 2 to Vincent Gurrea and 1 to Daniel Nehorai)
Bournemouth Raiders 0-19 Team Extreme (Derby)
5th/6th playoff: Bournemouth Raiders 7-24 North Devon Dogs (Raiders scorer: Matt Heasman to Andrew Clowes - Karl Forrest with the 1PAT)

Raiders opened up against the Chichester Sharks, and fell to a disappointing 14-6 loss. 7-0 after one possession, Heasman hit Nehorai on a short pass, and he brought several tackles to score. The PAT failed to leave the score 7-6. The Sharks scored again on blown coverage, and the Raiders couldn't get back into the game after that. Raiders suffered a loss in this game, as Mark Elliott suffered a neck injury which caused him to taken in an ambulance to hospital. Elliott returned later in the day, but his loss was missed over the coming games.

In game 2, the Raiders destroyed a poor Topgun Miramar side with 3 TD passes from Matt Heasman (2 to Daniel Nehorai and 1 to Vincent Gurrea). The Raiders small squad was stretched in the limit from game 3, as Heasman twisted his ankle and was immobile (nothing changed there then!) for the rest of the tournament, and injuries to Gurrea and Nehorai meant Raiders struggled in their 2 remaining games and couldn't go themselves justice. A 19-0 defeat to Team Extreme, was followed by a 24-7 defeat by North Devon Dogs. Against the Dogs, the Raiders trailed early 14-0, but a long range pass from Heasman was caught by rookie Andrew Clowes who turned it into a TD. Raiders then got the ball again, and drove to the Dogs 1 yard, but couldn't score to tie the scores. The Dogs pulled away in the second half to leave the Raiders finishing 6th in the 8 team tournament.

Special mention should be made to Andrew Clowes who made his debut for the Raiders, escorted Mark Elliott to hospital and still returned to score a TD against North Devon.

Thanks to all who attended, and hopefully the next tournament we play will have more people turning out for us. Next tournament is due to be played in Chichester.

Squad: Matt Heasman, Mark Elliott, Vincent Gurrea, Andrew Clowes, Bene Lewis, Daniel Nehorai, Alan Huddy, Karl Forrest

3rd July 2002 - BSFL Week 2 preview

We'll get a guide to our form when Brighton and Chichester take on the Fen Harriers this weekend. After comprehensively beating both of them, it will be interesting to see how the Harriers match up to them. Here's a preview taken from the league website.

"The Brighton Tsunami host their first tournament of the BSFL 2002 season at Waterhall, North Brighton, as the Fen Harriers and Chichester Sharks both travel to West Sussex. All three sides competed in week 1, and each side has yet to record a win. The Harriers, champions in 1999 and 2000, opened their season with a 21-6 reverse at Leicester and will be hoping to kick-start their season. The other two sides will meet in a local derby match-up. Both sides competed at Bournemouth and both sides lost their opening two fixtures against the Bournemouth Raiders and the Invicta Coyotes. Brighton were very impressive in their opening fixture against Invicta, holding last seasons runners-up at 14-14 until they went for a 4th down from their own 30 with 20 seconds left. Invicta stopped them and then scored the winning TD a couple of plays later. Brighton will be keen to open their account on home territory. Chichester’s all-out passing attack worked in fits and starts, but they could not effectively move the ball in week 1. They will be fired up for this one.

The venue is a place called Waterhall and it is located just off the A27, North of Brighton.

The order of play is :

Game 1 : Brighton v Chichester (Kick-off approx 11am)
Game 2 : Fen v Chichester
Game 3 : Brighton v Fen"

23rd June 2002 - Two league wins

The Bournemouth Raiders got their season off to a great start with two wins in their opening tournament of the 2002 BSFL season.

Bournemouth Raiders 36 Chichester Sharks 8

In the opening game of the 4-team tournament in Bournemouth, it was the hometown Raiders who got their season off to a great start with a convincing win against the Sharks, who were playing their first ever game off flag football.

The Raiders, with a new look O-Line, scored on their first 3 possessions, with QB Brad Smith running in all 3 TD’s as the Raiders went into the break leading 22-0.  Mark Elliott ran in 2 2-PAT’s, and Lee Eatly caught a further one from Brad Smith. The Sharks came back into it early in the second half with some impressive passing plays, and scored on a tipped pass from QB Nick Watson to WR Krystian Sordyl. The 2 PAT was added by Nick Watson to close the scoreline to 22-8.

RB Mark Elliott follows the O-Line on a sweep

The Raiders, however, kept up their relentless ground game. QB Brad Smith ran in another TD from distance, as he and RB Mark Elliott both racked up 100 yard games. The Raiders defense tightened their grip in the second half with notable contributions from Vincent Gurrea and Jon Wells (who caught an interception).

Smith fired in a TD from 35 yards out to WR Patrick Pflander to round off the scoring as the Raiders ran out 36-8 winners.

Bournemouth Raiders 34 Brighton Tsunami 0

The Bournemouth Raiders carried on where they left off in their first game with a punishing ground attack against the tiring Tsunami (who were playing back to back games).

Brad Smith ran in a disputed TD from 25 yards to open the scoring for the Raiders, and put them 6-0 up. Despite the efforts of QB Chris Emery, and Richard Tongue the Tsunami couldn’t get things going against the swarming Raiders defense led by the front 4 of Lee Eatly, Kirk O’Field, Matt Hemsley and Tom Jenkins. Following a Matt Heasman interception, Mark Elliott scored his first TD of the season running in from 35 yards out, and Jon Wells grabbed the 2 PAT from Brad Smith as the Raiders went into the break 14-0 up.

WR Tim Smith catches a pass from Brad Smith and runs it in for a TD against the Brighton Tsunami

Brighton started the second half well driving deep into Raiders territory, but the Raiders defense held firm.

The Raiders continued where they left off in the first half with a further running TD from Mark Elliott from 5 yards out. Brad Smith connected on a slant to Tim Smith who ran in the TD from 50 yards out. Tim Smith caught the 2 PAT from Matt Heasman. The Raiders defense earnt their shut-out, and then Tim Smith threw TD to Richard Tollervey to round off the scoring on the last play

31st May 2002 - Welcome to two new players to the squad. Karl Forrest played for the Bournemouth Buccaneers, when Bournemouth last had a senior kitted side, and Jon Wells who currently plays for the Tarannau Aberystwyth University side. Both look like being excellent acquisitions for the team.

21st April 2002 - The Bournemouth Raiders won a pre-season 5-on-5 scrimmage match with the newly formed Brighton Tsunami 66-46 at Hyde Park, London. Brad Smith threw for 7 TD's, and ran another one in as the Raiders continued their preparations for the new season.

They defeat Birmingham Raiders 25-12, Leicester Eagles 13-12, North Devon Dogs 18-14. Their only defeat comes against the Southern Sundevils (6-22), who go onto win the tournament.
