After a great start to the BAFL Premier campaign with a 48-12 win against the Southern Sundevils, and a 6-6 tie with last years Division 1 national finalists the London Blitz, the Aztecs Hosted perennial UK National Champions, the London Olympians.

After an opening day loss to the Jets, the Olympians needed a win to kick start their season, the Aztecs were in no mood to roll over however, and with pools of water, and loose turf on the field, as well as torrential rain, the scene was set for a smash mouth game.

The first of many turnovers for both teams on the day was conceded by the Aztecs in their Red Zone, after a fumbled exchange.   The Olympians took advantage on the ground, with Adrian John taking the ball in from 6 yards out.  The extra point was missed.

After the opening score, the weather and both defense’s kept the offense’s quiet for the remainder of the half.   In the second half, the vastly improved Aztec defense kept the Olympians out of the endzone after another trip deep into Aztec territory, which was followed by an 80 yard Aztec drive, which stalled on the Olympians 2 yard line.

The fourth quarter served up more of the same, with the Aztecs once again driving into Olympians territory as time expired, the final score being 6-0 in favour of the Olympians.   Aztec Head Coach Mark Hopkins had mixed emotions, “I’m delighted we ran the Olympians so close, as they have been the benchmark for football in this country for so long, I’m also a little disappointed however, as for the second week running we have narrowly lost out to one of last years national finalists”

The Aztec Offense totalled 190 yards, with GB Lions Runningback Gabriel Sey pickig up 70 yards on 14 carries, and Guy Hughes-Games picking up 60 on 13 carries.  The Aztec Defense held the Olympians to 175 yard, and took the ball away 10 times, Tom Proctor lead the way with 5 tackle, followed with 4 tackles by Mark Proctor, Anthony Lartey, and the Impressive Ty Williams still improving with each game following his recent step up from youth football.

The Aztecs play the East Kilbride Pirates on Sunday 27th May, with a 2.30 kick off, at the BAWA club on Southmead Rd, this will be the first ever meeting between the two teams.  For further information on the Aztecs, please visit www.aztecs.co.uk, or email bristolaztecs@hotmail.com.
