Caesars Came, Saw and were Conquered.

Sunday 11th September: Aztecs 34 – Nottingham Caesars 0.

Veteran QB Ashley Richer rolled back the years against the Caesars on Sunday, tossing two TD strikes to key the Aztecs’ comfortable 34 – 0 victory. First blood, however, went to the Aztecs defense, Linebacker Abdul Saro scooping up a wayward Gary Stainton fumble in the endzone to put the Aztecs on the board. Jamie Wilkinson added the extra point, and the first quarter ended with the Aztecs ahead 7-0.

After stepping in for starting QB Dave Keen (sponsored by Tuckers), a late scratch from the line up, Richer got the Aztecs offense rolling in the second quarter. With endzone passes finding Simon Glastonbury from 19 yards out, and a 69-yard catch and run by Nick Shotten-Gale, the Aztecs took a 21-0 lead into the half.

Into the third quarter, and the punishing running of Chris Taylor (sponsored by Infinity Exhausts) and Jimmy Taylor paid dividends, as both scored in the game’s final period to provide the final margin.

The Caesars, meanwhile, refused to quit with QB Stainton spreading the ball around, when not taking off with it himself. However, four interceptions by the Aztecs defense, and six turnovers in total, ensured that Bristol were not unduly threatened.

In addition to his touchdown, Saro led a productive afternoon for the defense, with 9 tackles, a sack and an interception. Sharing in the pick off’s were safety Adam Sparrow, GB Lions linebacker Tom Proctor and cornerback Craig Wilkinson.

Head Coach Mark Hopkins had this to say of the performance ‘Nottingham came down and threw everything they had at us, and although confident, we knew not to underestimate them. After making some early adjustments, we began to take control of the game, and I'm proud of the whole squad.

‘I am particularly proud of the five Aztecs, who were still playing youth football this time last year, who saw significant playing time. These guys who graduate to senior football each year are invaluable, as they keep the existing players on their toes and working hard, as there is always a younger guy after their job."

The Aztecs will welcome back QB Keen next week, as they head to the Division 1A North champion Doncaster Mustangs, who will undoubtedly offer stiff resistance as the Aztecs seek to make their third consecutive Bowl appearance. The Aztecs face off against the Mustangs at Retford RFC, Sunday 11th September, kick off 2.30pm.
