Sunday
3rd September
West Coast Trojans advanced through to the
semi final of the British American Football League with a dominating 56-0 win against the
Manchester Titans on Sunday. The Trojans took to the field confident that they could not
play any worse than their previous game against when they lost to Glasgow Tigers. Sunday
was a different game and by the end of play Trojans had totalled over 500 yards total
offence and 8 touchdowns.Trojans Head Coach, Gary
McNey said after the match Today was a team performance, I asked the guys before
kick off if they would give their all and play Trojans football like we did the first half
of the season. The result and score line speaks volumes, yes we were missing some big
names from our starting line up, none more so than injured WR Alan Street who was on the
sideline supporting the Trojans, but the guys who came in showed they have what it takes
to play ball
The game started with the Trojans kicking off to the Titans
who were soon forced to punt the ball away giving the Trojans the ball in their own half,
a first down pass to wide receiver Ross Murray was followed up with a 60yd touchdown pass
to GB Lions receiver Mark Squire who was playing for the first time in Trojans colours.
Squire latched on to the two extra point conversion giving
the Trojans an 8-0 lead. Mark would finish the day with outstanding numbers racking up no
fewer than 9 catches for 260 yards and 5 touchdowns.
The McNey Squire combination linked up again in the
quarter following a 3 and out drive by the Titans this time from 21 yards, rookie running
back Douglas Sweeney took the ball into the endzone for the extra point score 16-0 Trojans
The Trojans defence led by veteran line backer Scott
McMenemy who finished the day with no fewer than 11 tackles was starting to dominate the
Titans offence and in fact held them to under 70 yards total offence for the first 3
quarters of football, this would force the Titans to punt on many occasions giving
the Trojans the ball to advance and score at will.
A shoulder injury to running back Jordan Falconer in the
1st Q would take him out the game and with their other main running back Jon Sutherland
who is also carrying a injury playing on defence it was left to rookie running back
Douglas Sweeney who behind some superb blocking by linebacker turned fullback Scot
Mcmenemy. Going into the 2nd quarter it is was not long before the Trojans were chapping
on the Titans door and McMenemy then capped a nice drive with a 5 yard rumble which was
converted by a nice grab between 2 Titans defenders by rookie receiver David Stevenson.
Score 24-0.
The Trojans finished off the half with another score to the
go to new guy Squire this time he got a nice block from receiver Ross Murray and took the
short pass 60 yards to the Titans endzone giving the Trojans a 30-0 lead at the half.
Half Time
Trojans 30 v 0 Titans
The Titans came out fighting in the 3rd quarter and after
receiving the kick off the Trojans were forced to punt the ball away. But it was not long
before they had it back and QB Gary McNey on 3rd and goal took the ball himself into the
endzone for the score. McMenemy added the 2 point extra point giving the Trojans a lead of
38-0.
The end of the 3rd quarter saw wide receiver Mark Squire hook up again for touchdown
number 4, this time from 13 yards and again at the start of the 4th Q when he out jumped a
Titans defensive back and raced 64 yards for his 5th score of the day and a commanding
lead of 50-0.
The Titans showed true grit and behind some great running
from their rookie running back they started to move the ball on the tiring Trojans
defence. In fact the Titans amassed more yardage in the 4th quarter than the other 3 put
together. But the Trojans defence was determined to keep a clean sheet and stopped them
twice when in range of the endzone.
The days scoring was finished of when quarterback McNey
took off and after some silky moves and some great blocks by the offensive line took the
ball in from 20 yards out giving the Trojans a final score of 56-0.
Full Time
Trojans 56 v 0 Titans
HC McNey commented after the game
I thought that we might have struggled with a number of key players on offense
missing, but the guys who came in and stepped up were brilliant. We are coming together.
We had three games at the end of the season which killed us and just fell apart.
We had a good talking to the boys at training on the Wednesday night and we realised that
we had to go back playing the way we did for the first seven games of the season and I
think that we did that here today. I have to give credit to the Titans for not giving up,
they are a very young team and they will be a force in the future
Todays win clinches a spot in the British American Football
League (BAFL), Division 2 semi finals and sets up the long awaited meeting between Trojans
and Division 2, Central Champions, Coventry Jets. Trojans vs Jets promises to be one of
the games of the season when the teams meet at Coventry next Sunday where a win would earn
West Coast Trojans a place in the BAFL Final and promotion to the BAFL Division 1 |
