The Kent Exiles sealed the first unbeaten season in club history on Sunday, by defeating their local rivals the Maidstone Pumas for the third time.

The Exiles rested many of their key players in preparation for next weeks play-off game, which sees the South Wales Warriors visit Orpington for the quarter final match of the BAFL. If the Exiles win they will have home field advantage versus either the Essex Spartans or Oxford Saints the following week.

The Exiles started the game with Aaron Alexis scoring a safety by tackling the Pumas running back in the endzone, and a 2-0 lead. Following a safety the Exiles retained possession, and promptly drove downfield for Garry Dillon to score the first of his brace on the day from 3-yards out. Mat Tompsett kicked the extra point and the Exiles led 10-0.

The Exiles defence was rampant, and the Pumas could not move anywhere, Kerry Gray and Steve Morrison being the stars on the defensive line, combining for 11 tackles, and holding the Pumas to a measly 41 yards total offence on the day.

The Exiles meanwhile scored again, Glen Boyle with his first points of the season from a yard out, and rewarded for his efforts by being named www.americanfootballuk.co.uk man of the match.

Xavier Heckel was also having a storming first start, finishing the game with 100 yards on his 11 carries, and having a hand in setting up all of the day’s touchdowns. Including the Exiles next, a 34-yard pass from Joel Grundy to Grahame Warby.

Michael Turner then scored his fourth touchdown of the year, following some great pressure on the quarterback from Gary Ead, when he intercepted the Pumas quarterback and ran the ball back 39-yards for the score, Tompsetts kick was again good, and it was now an easy 28-0 lead.

By now Grundy had been rested for ex-Sheffield Sabre Jonathan Weller to take the helm, and he marked his appearance by hitting current Greenwich Mariner Darren Durup with a 19-yard strike. It was both players first reception in their careers, and led to Garry Dillon completing his day with a second touchdown from 3-yards out, Tompsett was again good with the kick.

Weller then led the Exiles to one more score, a 21-yard Tompsett field goal, and the final 38-0 scoreline.

Following the game Exiles Head Coach Phil Wood commented, "10 wins out of 10 so far, a feat not to be sniffed at. But we now need to prepare for the sterner test of the play-offs, where we’ll be pitched against the best division 2 teams the country has to offer. At the end of the day it’s the last game I’ll be judged on, and I aim to make that the Britbowl final in 4 weeks time."

Offensive Assistant Coach Jamie Poorman added, "Joel (Grundy) has been magnificent in his first two starts the last two weeks, Coach Wood now has a tough decision on his hands to decide who starts against the Warriors next week".
