BAFL Division Two

South Wales Warriors 72-0 Plymouth Admirals

After an early injury to starting running back James Godfrey left Owen “I call the Offense” Roberts as the only true tailback on the Warriors sideline, Roberts proceeded to rack up a truly astounding 312 yards and EIGHT touchdowns as the Warriors ran over the Admirals. Unsurprisingly it was Roberts who got the Warriors off to a good start after a long pass from Matt Slimming found Tom Longworth just shy of the sticks. ServiceCare Man-of-the-Match Roberts , ran in from one yard two plays later for the first of three touchdowns from him in the first quarter. The other two came from runs of 42 and 36 yards respectively. Longworth was himself not to be outdone and having already set up two Roberts’ touchdowns with the early catch and an interception return he added one of his own following great blocks by Andy Stockley and Warren Coombes to go 65 yards on a punt return. Two of four 2-point conversions in the opening quarter meant the score was 28 – 0 at the end of the first.

Plymouth, shaken by the early going, managed to hold the Warrior offense and forced it into punting early in the second but the Warriors defense stifled the Admiral offense, Ben Tucker getting 3 sacks on the day, forcing a three and out. With the ball on the Warriors 28 they looked to mount a drive to add to the score tossing the ball to Roberts on a sweep right. One big block by Chris Davies later and Roberts was away going the distance for his fourth of the day. The two point conversion failed. Davies was again utilized as time ran down in the half catching three passes from Slimming as the Warriors looked to end the half with another score. It was not to be though as, with time expired, Slimming heaved one toward the endzone and was picked off by the Admirals secondary leaving the score 34 – 0 at the half.

The third quarter ran much the same as the second. Strong defense, including some mammoth hits by Stockley, limited Plymouths’ offense to a field goal attempt which was blocked by Ken Hughes, Ben Tucker and Nathan James. The offense was then able to do their thing again as, behind an outstanding Offensive Line of Ken Hughes, Matt Roberts, Tim Macy, Mike Taylor and Alex Geach, RB John Bateman was able to go 50 yards before being dragged down. With the ball on the 20 yard line Roberts number was again called and he went the distance for his fifth. Another Roberts score, this time from 33 yards, and a successful two pointer meant the score was 48 – 0 after three quarters of play.

Entering the fourth, the Warriors looked to the air and from just inside his own half Slimming found WR Dave Young open and he was able to go 52 yards for the score. The 2-point conversion was successful. After the Admirals were able to repel the Warriors’ offense with a goal line stand the defense pounced with most of the d-line smothering the Admirals’ QB in the endzone for a safety. Tired legs on the depleted Admiral defense meant they were unable to stop the marauding Warriors offense and Roberts was able to add 2 more scores before the end leaving the final tally at 72 – 0 in favour of the Welshmen. They travel to Oxford next week with everything on the line looking to avenge their earlier defeat and claim the division crown.
