BAFL Division One A

Doncaster Mustangs 32-13 Chester Romans

The Doncaster Mustangs recorded a 32-13 victory in their first British American Football League home game of the season against the Chester Romans at Castle Park.

The visitors produced a plucky performance but five Stangs touchdowns ensured Donny would go 4-0 in Division 1A North and put them in pole position to receive a bye straight through to the semi-finals with none of their divisional rivals yet to record a victory.

Doncaster suited up an all-time high 46 players and held a 6-0 lead after the first quarter thanks to a touchdown run from Dave Oakley - his first of the season.

Chester only managed to yield one first down - that via a penalty - in the first-half and their deficit increased early in the second stanza when Gio Viscomi walked into the end zone with customary chutzpah.

And the hosts went into the interval with a 19-0 lead after quarterback Mike Hibbert threw for his fourth touchdown in three games, finding Paul Weston in the corner of the end zone.

The Mustangs started the second-half determined to duplicate their 51-7 victory over the Cheshire outfit on May 1 and Paul Tiggardine notched his seventh TD of the season on the first drive.

But the Romans replied with a touchdown of their own as James Tootle found the end zone on a customary sweep play.

And they reduced the Doncaster advantage to two scores in the fourth quarter when Jason Wilcox stripped the ball from Hibbert and raced in for six.

That score seemed to stimulate the hosts who saw Steve Egbury, on his return to action, scamper down the left sideline to complete the scoring.

Linebacker Chris Swinbourne was named defensive MVP for a series of big hits while center Dave Spencer caught the eye of the cognoscente to take the offensive gong.

Doncaster now have a bye week before their biggest test to date when they host Division 1 Gateshead Senators who warmed up for the encounter with a crushing 50-0 victory over Staffordshire.
