BAFL Division One
Staffordshire Surge 0-27 Doncaster MustangsA hat-trick of touchdowns by Paul Tiggardine steered the Doncaster
Mustangs to a 27-0 victory over the Staffordshire Surge in Burton-upon-Trent.
The victory lifts Donny to 3-0 and means they have
beaten all of their British American Football League Division 1A North rivals on the road,
putting them in pole position to receive a bye straight through to the semi-finals.
Both teams' offenses began as cold as the
pre-match hailstones as the opening four possessions of the game saw punts.
However it was the visitors who took the lead at
the end of the first quarter as quarterback Mike Hibbert connected with Paul Weston who
sauntered beyond the Surge secondary and into the end zone for his first TD of the season.
Brian Long converted the PAT and the lead was
stretched to 13-0 at half-time thanks to Tiggardine's first score.
Hibbert's pass to Paul Oates put the Stangs into
the red zone allowing the Barnsley bulldozer to charge to pay-dirt.
Doncaster started the second-half impressively and
Tiggardine, the BAFL player of week five, weaved through the home defense before being
stopped on the one.
He then rumbled over from close range as Donny
began gaining some revenge for two defeats at the hands of Staffs in 2003.
A third touchdown run followed soon after to
ensure the Mustangs would stretch their unbeaten run to 16, the longest streak in British
senior football.
Experienced Surge quarterback Richard Large had
only sporadic success against the Stangs defense who showed their superiority by producing
a superb goalline stand after a roughing the kicker, a sideline unsportsmanlike conduct
and a pass interference penalty had handed Staffs a first and goal at the one.
And fittingly the defense completed the scoring
when Long stripped the ball from Large and the ball was batted out of the end zone for a
safety.
Doncaster now have a week off before their opening
home game of the season on May 22 against the Chester Romans at Castle Park.
