BAFL Division One

Chester Romans 7-51 Doncaster Mustangs

The Doncaster Mustangs recovered from a slow start to record a resounding 51-7 victory at the Chester Romans in their British American Football League Division One clash on Sunday.

The visitors trailed after the first quarter but roared into life with debutants Mike Hibbert, Paul Farrar and Scott Goodard all contributing touchdowns. Chester capitalised on good position from the opening kick-off and a fake punt to set up Leon Cordingley's short-yard plunge for the opening score. But the Stangs hit back with 28 unanswered second quarter points.

Power back Paul Tiggardine charged from inside his own half down the right sideline to level the scores before quarterback Farrar connected with the sure hands of Paul Oates from close range to give Donny the lead.

Former Great Britain international quarterback Hibbert then went to work connecting with jet-heeled receiver Ian McCartney on a bomb to make it 21-7 to the visitors. The right footed pendulum of Brian Long making all three extra points. By this time Cordingley had left the game with a knee injury and the Romans were further demoralised when linebacker Chris Swinbourne picked off the final play of the first-half and rumbled in from 20 yards for his maiden score.

A two-pointer from Ric Hennessey gave the Mustangs a 22 point interval lead and that was extended on the second-half's first play from scrimmage.

Human highlight film Hibbert was given all day by the offensive line to find McCartney once again down the right sideline.

Bulldozer Tiggardine then added his second long-range touchdown before Goddard, on his first-ever BAFL carry, weaved the best part of 70 yards for the Mustangs' seventh and final touchdown. Another monster punt from the right boot of Long forced the Romans to concede a late safety as the Stangs improved to 2-0 in the 1A North division.

Doncaster will look to stretch their unbeaten record to 16 when they tackle old foes the Staffordshire Surge on Sunday in Burton-upon-Trent. The Mustangs are always on the look-out for new fans and sponsors, to find out more visit www.doncastermustangs.com
