The
Coventry Jets began their 2005 campaign with a comprehensive demolition of the East
Midlands Saxons, by a score of 57-0. On a bright, windy day in Peterborough the Jets
dominated every facet of the game. Combining 4 TDs on their first four possessions,
with a defensive that did not allow a first down for over 3 quarters, the Jets first ever
win was emphatic.
The Coventry outfit, having re-tooled in the
off-season with several GB Internationals joining the club, had a point to
prove
could they live up to all the pre-season hype? Jets QB and game MVP Tim Spaull
quickly swept aside any doubts as he marched his team up and down the field at will. The
opening drive covered 53 yards in 3 plays and culminated with Steve Coles blasting into
the end zone from 9-yards out. Former Birmingham Bulls wideout Peter Cleaver set the TD up
with a 37-yard reception and the Jets had a 6-nil lead.
The Saxons had no reply going 4 and out, setting
the pattern for the entire day. The Jets defense repeatedly stifled the running game of
the Saxons, setting the dynamic Jets offense up with great field position. On the second
Jets possession Tony Perkins danced his through the Saxon line and set up a 24-yard strike
to Mark Cohen. The former London Monarch added another TD shortly after and the first
quarter ended with the Jets in command at 22-0.
There would be no let up. Perkins scored from the
3-yard line, Anthony Ridgeway returned an interception for a score, Hossack scored on a
quick out pattern and Newey ended the first half rout with a safety. 45-nil at the half.
The second half was tame in comparison. Adam lane,
who flew in from Toronto last week, made his debut but failed to find his touch in the
third quarter following a 7 week layoff. The third quarter highlight was a hit made by New
Zealander John Hopewall which is still reverberating around Peterborough. Lane led a
75-yard scoring drive that ended with Cohen third TD and the ensuing kick-off found
its way in to the Saxons end zone with a Greg Williams score to conclude the scoring
at 57-0.
The Jets gave their second and third string guys a
chance for some game time and enjoyed the final minutes of their first win. Coach McManus
was proud of his team but cautioned: "Dont forget what it feels like to win.
Keep that focus, youve set a high standard. Enjoy the victory and do so with
dignity".
MVP Spaull finished the day with 3 TDs and
138 yards. Cohen toped 100 yards and made 2 TD receptions. Coles averaged 11 yards a pop
on 5 carries and Perkins led the team with 87 yards. Newey led the Defense with 11 tackles
and a safety.
