"High
spirits and a good work ethic usually transpose into a good season but it all comes down
to what goes on in between the whistles." said Blitz chairman Robin Pierce.
The Londoners travelled to Cambridgeshire without the latest prodigy of youth system,
19 year old Defensive Tackle Lorn Mayers, who is playing in NFL Europe for the Berlin
Thunder. However, they did bring with them some old faces including last years BSL MVP
Jason Brisbane, NFL Europe trialist Lennox Johnson and seasoned veteran and holder of the
Blitz single game rushing record Robert Davey, who took his place on the defensive line
for the clash. Along with the old faces, an assortment of new faces including US Marine
Dennard Greenwood and ex-NCAA college player Matt Cooke who stood under centre.
It was apparent from the first kick of the game that there was some fire in the bellies
of the away team and from the first offensive drive it looked like the Blitz would take an
early lead, but as would be the case for the first three quarters of play; after moving
the length of the field, the Blitz machine stalled in the red zone thanks to some sterling
efforts from the Cats defence. However, after the turnover on downs the Blitz defence as
usual made sure not to let their offence down and throughout the game seemed in command of
the home team allowing a total of only 27 yards rushing and 75 yards passing.
The game seemed at first totally one sided, with the Blitz dominating; but late in the
first quarter a heads-up play by Cambridge WR Glenn Pavely saw him scoop up a tipped pass
and sprint it into the end-zone on what would be counted as a 67 yard touchdown reception
from QB Kelvin Johnson. As time ticked on it seemed that the Blitz would not have their
day and although their offence kept knocking, the Cambridgeshire D would not let them in.
But in the 4th quarter Blitz running back come cornerback Lennox Johnson got his chance
to shine as he stepped back into the offensive huddle; igniting the fire in the engine
once more and helping the Blitz to their first score of the day. The Blitz proceeded to
score two further touchdowns before the final whistle, both coming on passes from QB Matt
Cooke to WR Justin Anderson.
Although the score sheet will hand the victory to the Blitzs skill players, the
unsung heroes were indeed the offensive line, who lead the team to a total of 366 yards
total offence, of which 310 came on the ground with 7 different Blitz players gaining a
rushing average of 5 or more yards per carry.
When asked about his 4th quarter display Johnson had this to say, "You know I
walked into the huddle and I said keep the faith, the offensive line did the rest, I just
ran into the holes they made."
The Blitz will next week travel to Southampton to face the Southern Sundevils, in what
will surely be a battle of physical and mental toughness.
