The Cheetahs recorded their ninth straight victory of the season with a 24 - 15 win over
the Essex Spartans, who battle and tested the Cheetahs through out the entire game.
Chiltern kicked off and the Spartans second play, Linebacker Nick Michael intercepted an
Aaron Griffiths pass and give the Cheetahs offence good field position. The Spartans
defence where fired up and did not give much yardage as the Cheetahs attempted a field
goal on 4th down. A bad snap left kicker Martin Homer no chance of kicking the ball, so he
attempted a pass, which receiver Conrad Patrick could not hold onto. On the Spartans next
drive, Cliff Moles sack Griffiths for a 5 yard loss and two short yardage runs force a
punt, from which Frank Mayo returned the ball 26 yards to the 17 yard line. The next play
saw Rob Suttling pass to Spencer Whybrow for the opening score of the game, with the extra
point just wide (6 - 0).
The Cheetahs increased their lead at the start of the second quarter on Abdul Lawal 42
yard run, with the extra point attempt again going wide (12 - 0). Cheetahs defence forced
the Spartans to punt, which was blocked by Alan Porter, the loose ball was recovered by
Cliff Moles in field position. Fine running by Andy Cochrane set up the cheetahs
third touchdown of the day, when Conrad Patrick catch an 8 yard pass from Rob Suttling to
give the Cheetahs a 18 - 0 half time lead.
The Spartans came out in the second half fired up on both sides of the ball, forcing the
Cheetahs to punt, then powerful running and a 34 yard pass down the sidelines got them
into scoring range with a first a goal at the 10 yard line. But Frank Mayo forced a
fumble at the hand off, with the loose ball recovered by Alan Porter. An excellent
21 yard run by Luke Foster and 27 yard catch by Conrad Patrick drove the ball down field
for the Cheetahs, before turning over the ball on downs.
Essexâs determination paid off in the fourth quarter on Aaron Griffiths 24
yard touchdown pass to Paul Simpson, with Gareth Evans kicking the extra point (18 - 7).
The momentum of the game was now moving into Essexâs advantage and with 4
minutes left in the game Griffiths connected with John Stott for a 22 yard touchdown. The
same pair combined for the two extra points, leaving the Spartans only 3 points adrift (18
- 15). Frank Mayo returned the kick off to the half way line from where Andy
Cochrane picked up an excellent 8 yard on the ground, forcing his way through 4 defenders.
Spencer Whybrowâs got a first down with a 10 yard run on 4th down with Abdul
Lawal rushing 19 yards into the scoring zone. This set up Andy Cochrane to score his 11th
touchdown of the season from 10 yards out with less the a minute remaining in the game and
hand the Cheetahs a 24 - 15 win.
Offensive MVP went to Abdul Lawal for his fine running, with the defensive award going to
Owen Thomas, who recorded 11 tackles.
The Cheetahs now travel to Maidstone this Sunday to face the Pumas in the last of the
regular season games with a 12 oâclock kick-off as they look to record a
perfect season by going 10 - 0. The following week (15th August) will see the
