Chiltern continued their winning start to the season, with their first win
in three attempts over Essex Spartans, how visited Amersham for the first
time on Sunday.
Chiltern kicked-off, and after a short run, Ally Reid picked off a pass on
the second with a superb diving catch to give the Cheetahs excellent field
position. Five plays and 22 yards later Spencer Whybrow opened the scoring
on a 4 yard run with Martin Homer scoring the first of his 4 extra point
attempts to go into the Chiltern record books, with the successful kicks in
a game. Essex started to move the ball on their next drive, which saw their
longest play of the game, a 17 yards run and two further penalties by the
defence gain extra yardage before having to punt the ball. Running back,
Andy Cochrane pick up a couple of first downs for the Cheetahs before the
end of the quarter.
The Second quarter started with Andy Crowther punting deep into Essex
territory and Ade Stemp tackle on the return at their 10 yard line. Both
sides then both had a good drives ending in punts with an excellent Ally
Reid punt return for the Cheetahs to the Spartans 6 yard line, where Andy
Cochrane scored the first of his two touchdowns on the next play. With
Homer''s extra point attempt giving the home team a 14 - 0 lead. The
Spartans where unable to ball on their next drive, and Chiltern''s Darren
Shepsman and Abdul Lawal ran out the first half clock.
Essex kick-off to start the second half, with Ally Reid returning the ball
to just over the half way line. Andy Cochrane and Spencer Whybrow gain more
yardage on the ground before Whybrow got on the end of Rob Suttling''s 14
yard pass in the end zone, with Martin Homer kick good (21- 0).. Essex still
not convincingly moving the ball forced a turn over on the Chiltern''s next
drive, intercepting Suttling''s pass in the end zone. The quarter ended when
Owen Thomas and Darren Whybrow combined to sack the Spartans QB for a 5 yard
loss.
Cheetahs defensive MVP Ally Reid intercepted a pass for the second time in
the game on the opening play of the 4th quarter, which set up the offensive
MVP Andy Cochrane to score his second touchdown of the game, this time from
38 yards out, taking him over 100 yards on the day. Martin Homer completed
the scoring with his extra point kick (28 - 0). Essex where determined to
get on the score board and after a excellent kick return over the half way
line, the Cheetahs defence held firm, before Alan Porter blocked Gareth
Evans field goal attempt. Chiltern continued to pick up firsts downs with
runs by Cochrane and Luke Foster, but where unable to score again with the
game ending with Eddie Wells and Andrew Maxwell combined sacking of Spartans
QB for a 10 yard loss.
Chiltern''s next opponents, Sussex Thunder are also unbeaten, recording 5
wins to date and top the South East Conference table with the Cheetahs in
second place in what will be a battle to remain undefeated this Sunday at
Amersham & Chiltern Rugby Club, kick-off is at 2.30pm
