The Carrickfergus Knights played the Belfast Bulls in the first northern derby match of the season. It was the Bulls first ever game in the top division of football in Ireland. It was also the first IAFL game for new Bulls Head Coach Barry Magee and the debut game for the Bulls new maroon and white uniforms. The game was played in some of the worst weather conditions ever experienced at an IAFL game including driving rain and gale force winds. The conditions made passing the ball difficult for both quarterbacks, Stephen McDowell of Carrickfergus and Scott Lennox of Belfast. The difficult conditions also contributed to the numerous fumbles committed by both teams. Belfast got off to a promising start, however a 55yard touchdown pass from Lennox to Chris McKeown was cancelled out by an ineligible player downfield penalty. The Knights scored their first touchdown later in the first quarter with a 13 yard pass from McDowell to Ian McIlroy. Both teams punted on most of their possessions in the second quarter when the only scoring chance was a missed 37 yard field goal by Belfast. The Bulls put together a couple of good drives in the third quarter, but were stopped by a fumble and a Chris Davidson interception. The Knights defense dominated throughout the fourth quarter and their offense put together a couple of good drives cumulating in touchdown runs of 2 yard and 14 yards by running back Darren Montgomery to give the Knights a 19-0 victory.
