25th June 2003 - South Wales Warriors 0-27 Bristol Aztecs

The Bristol Aztecs took their record to 7-2 on Sunday, defeating the South Wales Warriors 27-00 at Llanrumney, Cardiff.  The game saw Aztec running back Kenny Saro eclipse the 1000 yard mark for the season, and the team take their rushing total in excess of 2000 yards.  For the second time in three games, Saro made his first carry count for six points - shedding tacklers on a dazzling 60 yard run.  Jamie Wilkinson's extra point was good and the Aztecs were up 7-0 in a hurry.  The Welsh side were kick-started into life, and the remainder of the first quarter saw both sides exchange punts.  Into the second and with the storm clouds overhead, the Aztecs brought some thunder of their own.  Saro and Stone marching the ball downfield, setting up QB Richer's perfectly lofted 16 yard scoring strike to Wilkinson.  A missed point after and it was 13-00.  The home sides short passing game was having some success with Barry Winter frustrating the Aztecs, but the Bristol Defense weren't in the mood to give up any points.  With seconds left in the half, Richer heaved up a deep pass, and once again Wilkinson made the grab, eluding the Warriors defense to score.  The receiver converted his own TD and it was 20-00 at the interval.

Maintaining pressure and in control of the game, a third quarter 21yd TD pass from Richer to Tim Stone was the fatal blow - Richer evading the sack, finding the open man, and the big fullback was never going to be kept out of the end zone.  Once again Wilkinson converted and it was 27-00.  A second interception for Bristol ensured that the Welsh scoring threat was neutralized.

It wasn't until after the final whistle that Saro's 1000 yard achievement was announced - capping a 173 yard day.  Along with Saro, the Aztecs other brace of backs performed admirably, 102 yards from the combined efforts of Taylor, Stone, Wiltshire, Matt and Olly Barratt.  Not to be outdone, the Aztec passing game had a potent day - Ashley Richer 4 of 6 for 107 yards and 3 scores - taking him over 500 yards passing on the season.   Dave Keen contributing with 3 of 5 for 22 yards.  On the receiving end, Wilkinson's 2 grabs both being scoring passes, giving him 6 on the season.

Defensively, a second consecutive shut out for the Aztecs, Jay Taylor with 9 tackles and a sack, Abdul Saro with 6 tackles and 2 sacks, giving him 7 QB takedowns on the year.   Interceptions too for Ben Tolley and Chris Powles - both with their second pick of the year.

The Aztecs wrap up their regular season with a home fixture against the Dominos Oxford Saints on Sunday at BAWA Healthcare & Leisure, Southmead Rd, Filton.  Now almost assured of a play off spot, the Aztecs must win this final game and hope for a Southern Sun Devil loss to capture the South West division title.  Kickoff is at 2:30pm.
