25th June 2003 - Glasgow Tigers 24-20 Manchester Titans

The Manchester Titans may be having trouble breaking their duck but they are sure making a habit of making games exciting and bringing them to the wire.

Early in the game, it could have been argued that long journey had taken out of the Titans as they conceded two td’s on consecutive drives after the offence went 3 and out twice. The Tigers made a steady drive finished by a short run, however the two point conversion was prevented by the Titans D. The second score was a 10yd pass from #88 Matt McCusker to #80 Gareth Alexander, again the conversion failed.

From this point onwards the game changed rapidly, with the Titans defence making stands on 5 consecutive drives in the rest of the half including one forced fumble and recovery by Chris Haywood.

The offence, gradually got their game together, they finally made a huge breakthrough when QB Rik Lowthian found Omah Bahfir for a 45yd reception, which set up a touchdown for Jodie Forster. The half ended with Manchester well back in the game at 12 – 6 to Glasgow.

The 3rd Quarter saw the Titans start confidently as Tamas Byrne was given his reward for many first half receptions as he outpaced the Tiger backfield and scored from a pass for an 85yd touchdown, the biggest in Titans history. Byrne went on to convert the conversion to give the Titans the lead 13-12. The Tigers responded ferociously however and marched the length of the field with mainly rushing plays finished off by a 12yd pass. Again the 2pt conversion was prevented.

Going into the final quarter the Tigers went for a fourth and goal attempt and a close call was rewarded to the Tigers when Paul Keys caught and was tackled just on the endzone line. This put things heavily in Glasgow’s favour 24 -13, as James Keogh made a big tackle to make this Glasgow’s fourth failed 2 point conversion of the game.

The Titans responded well, with a long drive headed by QB Rik Lowthian. And finished again with a 15yd pass to #46 Tamas Byrne. Tam converted again to make the score 24 – 20.

The Tigers were trying to keep possession at this late stage in the game but a great interception by Adam Boanas, gave the Titans hope. At this crucial stage the Tigers D stepped up, and managed to force a turnover on downs, and this is all they needed as they took a knee to run the clock out.

This was yet another classic the Titans have come out the wrong end of. However, the Titans camp is optimistic their first win is on its way. The next match will be against the Staffordshire Surge on 6th July at 2.30pm at Hough End Rugby Club, Chorlton, Manchester.
