25th June 2003 - Cambridgeshire Cats 47-14 Nene Valley Hybrids

A highly motivated Cambridgeshire Cats team, sponsored by Mickey Flynn's American Pool in Cambridge, hosted local rivals the Nene Valley Hybrids and came away with a hard fought 47-14 victory.

The Cambridgeshire offence clicked instantly and scored on it's first seven drives. Ken 'K-Train' Sweeney started the scoring with an 11 yard run to cap the Cats first drive. Brian Jelley kicked the extra point to make the score 7-0. But the Hybrids came straight back with a combination of strong running by Ricardo Givens and tricky shovel passes from Toby Mason to Jez Hannon before Steve Booth scored on a 21yard run. Booth then added the extra point to tie the game 7-7. The Cats came straight back and ended the first quarter with another touchdown as Seth Campbell ran in from 8 yards out. The extra point attempt by Jelley was good and the Cats led 14-7.

But the Hybrids were determined to continue the shoot-out and started the second quarter with an equalising touchdown. More strong running by Givens this time set up a 2 yard run by Buddy Williams. The extra point was kicked and the game tied again at 14-14. The Cats went to the air for their next score as Quarterback Nick Tilbury threw a perfect strike to wide receiver John Smith from 16 yards out. Once again Jelley added the extra point and the Cats were back in front, 21-14.
At last the Cats defence found their usual form and stopped the Hybrids offence. Once again Cambridgeshire embarked on a long, time consuming drive which was finished off by Booty Morrison powering in from 12 yards out. Yet another extra point kick by Brian Jelley meant the Cats ended the half 28-14 in the lead.

The Cats took control of the game in the third quarter as the Defence continued to limit the Hybrids offence and K-Train Sweeney added another two touchdowns, from 1 and 32 yards out. Jelley could only manage to convert one of the extra point attempts but Cambridgeshire still held a commanding 41-14 lead.

The Hybrids continued to battle hard in the fourth quarter and came close to reaching the Cats end zone on two occasions but the games scoring was finished by the Cats as Tilbury threw his 13th touchdown of the season connecting with receiver Steve Peck from 33 yards out.

K-Train Sweeney added 105 yards, from just 13 carries, to his three touchdowns while Quarterback Nick Tilbury completed 10 of 12 pass attempts for 163 yards and 2 Touchdowns. On Defence Linebackers Tre Carpenter and Mickey Howling had 13 tackles each.

The Cats stay on top of the British Senior League's South Eastern Conference with an 8-0 record and a slender one game lead over the Kent Exiles who have a 7-1 record. The next game for Cambridgeshire is another tough test away at Nene Valley, in Kettering, on the 13th July 2003.
