20th June 2003 - Merseyside Nighthawks 19-14 Manchester Titans

After a tied game earlier in the season and tied position in the league both teams were highly charged for this game and both upped the standard of play. Eventually Merseyside emerged victorious in a game which could have gone either way.

On the opening kickoff for the game a sign of it not being Manchester’s day showed early as the kickoff rebounded of a Titans helmet and straight back into the nighthawks path, and they gained possession. Both defences stood strong to start with. With running games what both offences were showing early on. Titan Lee Morton, and Nighthawk Nathan Hazel both with big runs.

It was the second quarter when the scoring began with a six yard run from Nighthawk running back Nathan Hazel. The field goal attempt was unsuccessful. The Titans responded well led by QB Rik Lothian, with a drive almost the length of the field. A spectacular catch from Tamas Byrne kept the drive alive. The drive ended with a fourteen yard reception from Jodie Forder, who also caught the 2pt conversion to put the Titans ahead 8-6.

However the nighthawks responded even more ferociously by bringing the ball on the run all the way back and scoring with a 10yd run again by Nathan Hazel.  The nighthawks then had to go for the two points. QB Andy Ley tried to scramble, but was caught, but then quick thinking paid off as he tossed it to Nathan hazel who ran in for 2.

Rik Lowthian passing game for the Titans shone again on the next drive and this was emphasised when coming out of the pocket for a 35yard pass to Tamas Byrne to level the scores. The half ended and things were all square, making things even more tense for the next half.

The third quarter saw good stands by both  defences and Merseyside were the first to breakthrough with a field Goal from Dave Webb. On the following drive, Manchester were forced to punt from deep in there own territory and a bad snap led to a safety, and a Merseyside lead of 19-14.

Into the final quarter and sparks of hope for the Titans were there as an Interception from James Keogh, and then later a tackle on fourth down from Mark Vickers to force a turnover on downs. But on both occasions the Nighthawks defence was solid. The game was finished off by an Interception from the Nighthawks Gary Kay.

Both teams played out of their skin in what was a cleanly fought battle.
