7th June 2003 - Doncaster Mustangs 37-19 Merseyside Nighthawks

In Hot, sticky conditions, Mustangs leading rusher, Brian Long, added 11 carries and 171 yards to his tally leading the home team to a convincing win against the Merseyside Nighthawks.

The ‘Stangs’ took control of this fixture when Free Safety Tim Adams intercepted a hurried pass from the Nighthawks QB, carrying the ball deep back into Nighthawks territory. A few short drives later and ‘Stangs’ QB and the offence's MVP, Graham Lightfoot scored from the 1 yard line, the extra points attempt missed by inches leaving the score at Mustangs 6, Nighthawks 0.

Mustangs RB, Steven Egbury, early in the second quarter, carried the ball 8 yards into the Nighthawks end-zone with the 2 extra points added by RB Brian Long, making the score Mustangs 14, Nighthawks 0. The ensuing second quarter of action saw the fired up Mustangs defence, creating havoc for the Merseysiders as they failed to advance the ball convincingly, forcing the Nighthawks to punt the ball on many occasions.

Not to be totally outplayed the Nighthawks finally strung together a drive resulting in a touchdown pass to a waiting receiver in the end zone, failing to add the extra points with an unsuccessful kick. To make the score, Mustangs 14, Nighthawks 6.

Once again ’Stangs’ QB Graham Lightfoot scrambled in with the ball from 9 yards out, adding another 6 points to his tally on the day. Two extra points were added by James ’Bez’ Berry who ran into the Nighthawks end-zone untouched thanks to impeccable blocking by the Mustangs offensive line, making the score Mustangs 22, Nighthawks 6.

To top this following a badly snapped ball on a Mustangs punt attempt, the Nighthawks strung together two plays hitting pay-dirt with the first of two touchdowns in the second quarter, the first being an impressive 52 yard dash into the end-zone, the extra point attempt was also good, making the score Mustangs 22, Nighthawks 13. The second score being a 12-yard pass. This time however they failed in the extra points attempt when the ball was badly snapped, Mustangs Linebacker Martin ‘Diesel’ Gardham, making an excellent solo tackle to stop the run in with the ball. This saw the close of the first half of action with the half time score Mustangs 22, Nighthawks 19. Could the Nighthawks claim victory in the second half?

The second half once again saw the ‘Stangs’ defence wearing down the Nighthawks with the third quarter proving to be a mid field battle. Neither side coming out on top until the fourth quarter started.

A series of drives and plays by the ‘Stangs’ seized the game and put it out of reach of the Nighthawks. RB Steven Egbury ran in a touchdown on a 27 yard run followed by Brian Long adding the 2-point conversion. Mustangs 30, Nighthawks 19.

The Mustangs final scorer of the day Adam Kettlewell ran in a 10 yard touch down followed by a successful extra point kick by newly appointed Kicker Mark Blyth.  The score line now at 37 - 19 in the Mustangs favour the game finally brought to a conclusion with a hard fought win, for the ‘Stangs’.

Brian Long had a touch down disallowed after a fellow player, fouled a Nighthawks player, otherwise the score could have been a lot higher.

Most valuable player on the Mustangs defence went to Line Backer, Paul Jowe for a string of consistent tackles against the Merseyside running plays.
