27th May 2003 - SOUTHERN SUNDEVILS 30 SOUTH WALES WARRIORS 0

The Sundevils opened the game with a 50 yard drive, but the Warriors dug deep to force a fumble at the 3 yard line.

With South Wales’ Spread - No Huddle offence, the game, & drives went by very quick. Unfortunately the Warriors couldn’t get anything going and their first four drives ended in Punts.

At the start of the second quarter Warriors QB Russ Wingfield was sacked on second & third down, then was intercepted by James Irving on 4th down at the 15.

The Sundevils attempted two rushes, but the stingy Warriors D held firm. Then Southern QB Davin Jones found his rhythm, connecting on three straight passes, to move the ball down to 23 yard line. Showing great poise QB Jones looked off the secondary and hit his third read, finding WR Steve Shergold at the 13. Shergold did the rest, running in untouched for his first score on the day. Jones added the extra two, diving in at the pylon. Sundevils 8 Warriors 0

The balanced attacked caught South Wales off guard, but there would be no more scoring in the second quarter.

The Warriors received the second half KO, but again, went 3 & out. The Sundevils opened with a short drive of their own before punting back to South Wales.

With a stalled second drive, the Warriors lined up to punt, and Southern DB James Irving partially blocked the punt.

Southern’s ensuing drive stalled again, so Southern HC Simon O’Hara opted to punt, pinning South Wales deep in their own half. This decision would effectively ice the game, as a fumble on first down, found its way into James Irving’s hands and he strolled untouched into the end zone (his 3rd Defensive TD this season) from 13 yards out.Mark Penfound added the extra 2 points for a 16-0 lead.

As the Warriors tired, Southern stepped up again with LB Mark Penfound intercepted a Wingfield pass at the 10. But not to be left out Irving would complete his great day with his second interception too. This pick would set up another Jones to Shergold TD, this time form 32 yards out. The same pair added the extra two points for a 24-0 score line.

Mark Penfound rounded out his exception day (13T 6A 2sacks 2 int and a blocked punt) with another Wingfield Interception. Then Rookie RB Adam Parsons broke outside and raced 54 yards down the sideline for paydirt to complete the scoring on the day.
