17th May 2003 - Sabres 0-24 Cambridgshire Cats

The Cambridgeshire Cats, sponsored by Mickey Flynn's American Pool Hall of Cambridge, recorded the hundredth win in Cambridge gridirons history with a 24-0 shut out victory of the Sabres from Southend.

The Cats offence started the game well but errors restricted them to a 21 yard Field Goal by Brian Jelley and a three point lead at the end of the first quarter.

As the second quarter the Cats defence, led by Linebackers Chris Wolfe, Mickey Howling and Tre' Dawg Carpenter, soon provided the offence with opportunities to get on the scoreboard again. First Quarterback Nick Tilbury found Wide Receiver John Smith from 48 yards out for the first touchdown of the game. Then Simon 'Doc' Lewis scored his first career touchdown with a 36 yard return after Defensive Back Chris Dahl blocked a Sabres punt. The games scoring was completed when running back Ken 'K-Train' Sweeney smashed in from 4 yards out. Brian Jelley kicked the extra points after each of the touchdowns to give the Cats a 24-0 half time lead.

The Cats failed to score in the second half. But they did manage to give rookies and new players some much needed playing experience with eight different Running Backs rushing the ball and six receivers making catches.  Credit must also be given to a undermanned Sabres team that battled hard right to the final whistle and it took spectacular plays by Chris Dahl and Defensive End Ian Brazier to keep them out of the Cats end zone.

On a sad note, the game was the last with the Cats for Defensive Backs coach Harry Donaldson who returns to the United States in the near future. All at the Cats would like to wish Harry and his family all the best for the future and thank him for his hard work over the past two seasons.
