18th May 2003 - Plymouth Admirals 0-14 Southern Sundevils

On a windy day in Plymouth, the Sundevils travelling squad received the opening KO and behind the running of Barry Martin and ex-Admiral Tim Iles march straight into Plymouth’s half, but stalled following penalties.

But the Admirals, with the ball at mid field, couldn’t take advantage of the field position. Their first series, following two offside penalties, accounted for minus 4 yards, and then their ensuing punt was block by LB Mark Penfound.

This penalty littered, but clean, game prevented either Offence from getting into stride, and another Sundevil drive stalled at Plymouth’s 26.

The Admiral next drive started the same as the first, with LB Mark Penfound, and then LB James Irving make consecutive tackles for losses. Then an Admirals misdirection play broke out over left tackle for 20 yards and a first down. This play would actually be the longest play from scrimmage on the day, but would also be one third of Plymouth’s first down on the day too.

Three plays later the Sundevils forced a punt, but neither offence could get anything going as the 1st Qtr ended.

A roughing the punter penalty gifted the Sundevils another chance as the second quarter started and the Southern O’line drove the team down to the Admirals 20 yard line, before Admiral S Richard Howlett would break up the fourth down pass. Howlett and Team-mate Adrian Dabbs actually broke up 5 of Southern QB Davin Jones’ 11 atts.

The Admirals gained some breathing room, with their second first down, but the Sundevils were not going to let this one slip, and held firm on the next three plays.

After another exchange of punts the Sundevils started at Plymouth 38 yard line and behind the power running of Iles (30 carries 103yds) & Martin (12 car 60yds) they drove down to the Admirals 14 yard line, but it would be Howlett again, break up a pass, to stop another Sundevils at the 7 yard line.

The Sundevils D stepped up the pressure once again, and Mark Penfound tackled the RB for a 4 yard loss to start the next series, and following two straight QB sneaks the Admirals would have to punt on fourth down at their own 11. A low snap put the Admirals punter in real trouble, but he saved a TD by regaining the ball at the one.

But it wouldn’t be the Sundevils as penalties and broken passes kept the game scoreless as time expired.

Half time 0-0

Southern opted to take the wind in the third quarter, and this would pin Plymouth deep. James Irving broke up a third down pass and following the punt, QB Davin Jones would engineer an eight play 38yard drive, rounded out by a Tim Iles 9 yard TD Run. Iles would add the extra two and the Sundevils would not look back.

Another deep KO by Leo Lindsay would have the Admirals starting at their 3. With Plymouth struggling to get anything going would be forced to punt.

A promising Sundevils 10 play drive would again stall at the start of the third following DB Adrian Dabb’s interception. But a block in the back on the return would push the Admirals back to their end zone and two plays later, James Irving returned an interception 14 yards for paydirt.

This score sealed the victory and behind the running of Rookie RB Adam Parsons, the Sundevils ran out the clock, and jump back to the top of the South West Conference.

Defensive Captain Mark Penfound whose 15T 4A, helped hold the Admiral to just 49 yards on 49 plays, with just the three first downs.
